“The prompts were not easy, and therefore all participants must be congratulated for their efforts. You all did a wonderful job.

We subscribe to the belief that “there are many who write poems, but very few true poets.” Nevertheless, it was challenging for us to come up with winners for January 2011 submissions. Believe me when I say, there was much discussion doing this process, as we desired to choose the best. That being said, we would like to announce the following winners, please join with us in congratulating all of them:

POET OF THE MONTH

We had decided to eliminate the title “Poet of the Month”, but this month brought us an amazing addition to our circle of young and old poets, and as such, we voted to give out this title sparingly, and only when the poet is truly deserving. One such person is Nanka. She well deserves this award, and we site her “Acrostic Haiku” as further proof of her most unique talent.

There are many different styles of Haiku, many writers never stick to the rules. We believe that for a poem to be labeled as a “true” haiku it must keep to the traditional Japanese style and subject matter. Nanka, not only kept to the traditionally way of writing a Haiku, she followed the prompt with great finesse. Please won’t you join with us in congratulating her for receiving this most deserved award!

INNOVATIVE ACROSTIC PROMPTS:

Acrostic Sonnet (AS) – UNPLEASANTNESS

Writing a Sonnet is never an easy task. Many have attempted it, but few have really stepped up to the plate. It was made more difficult when we asked participants to do an “Acrostic Sonnet”. To our amazement, two participants stood out, and they both created amazing and creative “acrostic sonnets”. The contrast between these two writers’ sonnets is very interesting.

Nanka, Winner for her amazing acrostic sonnet that takes you on a joy ride into the "Unpleasantness" of realizing you are dead.

Write Girl, Honorable Mention for her unique acrostic sonnet on a very "Unpleasant" situation as it relates to love, and all the pain it entails.

Acrostic Short Stories is one of our favorite prompts. It not only helps the writer to stay focus, but when written creatively, it becomes an amazing piece of art that can be enjoyed for years to come. For those who met the challenge, we offer out most heartily congratulations.

Acrostic Short Story – BACKDROP
Amias, Winner for her story on a most dreaded disease, Alzheimer, which steal memories and leave the victims to the whim of fate, many, shut away from their love ones until they die.

Nanka, Honorable Mention for her story about poverty and pain, and the irony of how it affects almost every facet of our lives --- but in spite of it we persevere.

Acrostic Short Story – BOOKMARKS
Nanka, Winner for her wonderful acrostic short story on bookmarks, relating to Karma, and being released from captivity.

Write Girl, Honorable Mention for her short story on bookmarks, skillfully linking the present with the past, and what one may see in a looking glass as time passes.

Poet Of The Month - February 2010

Choosing the poet of the month is always hard, as so many poems and stories were very creative, inspiring, and touching. However, this month poet of the month goes to Amias, who has a massive talent for writing acrostic! The majority of her poems kept true to this month “Universal Theme”.

Most Active Poet - February 2010

Congratulations to Leo, winner of the "Most Active Poet Award" for the month of February 2010. Leo is by far Acrostic Only most active poet, and for February he posted a whopping 12 Acrostics and 12 Acrostic Short Stories. Leo has posted more acrostics and won more badges than anyone at Acrostic Only. We are not only proud of his accomplishments; we truly appreciate his loyalty. Best Acrostic Story - February 2010

Congratulations to the winner of "Best Monthly Acrostic" .

There was a bone of contention among the judges, and we have decided that there must be a minimum of three short stories per prompt to be considered for an award in that category. Although we did agree to give a brief review on some stories, since two were submitted, but a badge will only be issued in the categories that had a minimum of three submissions.

Badges will be issued for Prompts 4 and 12, which met the requirement. Others receiving a one time review, which will not be repeated in upcoming months, are Prompts 1, 7, 10 & 11 that had two submissions.

Prompt 4 – My Country

These are interesting stories, two had the same theme. Either case, the winning piece came down to keeping within the word limitation.

Leo (Opportunities; choices and family – “To be or not to be”, this is what Shakespeare said. In this case the main character had to make a choice, to stay or not to stay, and since he was getting the same prize from each choice, he chooses the one that would keep him near his family, in a city he called “my country”.)

Saras (Opportunities; choices and family –In this story the main character was put in two very interesting situation. On one hand he embraces modern technology which would bring him back to his Country, and on the other hand, he yield to family tradition and marries a woman that was choose for him. Uniquely he mated two different cultures, and it worked for him, because it gave joy to his parents. But I wonder did he or his prospective Bride receive that same joy?)

Amity (Greener Grass; disappointments – here the main character is disappointed with their country, and feels the one that has more strict by the government is the better choice. I do agree that a country that put the comfort of others above its own citizens, well the government should be replace. But what seems greener on the other side of the wall may be that way because they hid the mess under the roots of the grass.)

Leo is the winner, because he kept to the rules of the prompt as it relates to word limitations.

Prompt 12 – New Dawn

All three submissions touched on the mind and what can be imprinted there, even when one is coming out of the womb, or coming out of darkness or disillusionment. They are all winners indeed.

Leo (Inspiring; this story was inspiring because the main character defeated his fears and move outside of his comfort zone. In other words he went over the provable walls and found success in his efforts.)

Saras (Imprints; here the author shows that babies are not born in ignorance as some may believe. Everything they see is imprinted on their minds, sort of like a computer, and the possibilities of their recall can be astounding to say the least.

Shweta (Universally inspiring; here the author shows a more universal and spiritual look at a new dawn, and that is, that no matter the hardships, no matter how bad we think our lives are, every day begins a new dawn, and if we will only go inside of self and listen to that inner voice, we will wake up and witness it with joy!)

Although all three stories are amazing indeed, Shweta is the winner as her piece is more universal in nature.

Acrostic Short Story Reviews:

Prompt 1 – My Family

Both stories were about a relationship between mother and child, and how one can become dependence on the other for whatever reasons.

Leo (Touching; this is a very beautiful relationship between mother and son after the lost of a father, and the story flows.)

Amity (Understandable; a good story about a mother’s love for her only child, and the reason she lives, and the sacrifice she was making. However, it was a bit confusing in its delivery, as the ending was such that some aspects of it should have been clearly introduced early on.

Leo’s story was touching and flowed better. Amity’s story was understandable, but it did not flow.

Prompt 7 – Divided We Fall

Saras (Educational; this story actual taught me about the ins and outs of Crickets, and the importance of team work.

Leo (Death; this story shows what can happen to lives when leaders do not listen to the ones they are leading, and when the ones being lead do not speak out when they see danger by the one that is leading them.

Both stories show the epitome of what happens when team work is sacrificed to individual egos.

Prompt 10 – Rainbows

Leo (Betrayal; sometimes when a friend betrays you, it will backfire, as it did in this story. In this case the one being betrayed got the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but in real life, this is a rarity.)

Shweta (Universal; freedom - this story shows the epitome of what can happens when we let pain and disappointment go. It’s universal in nature, because it is a pot of gold that is truly obtainable.)

Both stories were good, and there is a lesson in them for all of us. If you are going to steal from another, make sure you can read their mind so that you will be able to explain the details of what you have stolen. If you can’t move past pains or disappointments, you will be trapped in a lifetime of failures.

Prompt 11 – Phoenix

Leo (Hopeful; like anything else that has the ability to die and be reborn, hope and happiness are on the top of the list. This story is about the proverbial slit of light in the darkness.

Saras (Courage; in every profession one must have courage. Courage is the ability to rise above your fears, and other fears to do what is necessary for survival, including your own. It is good when one has a best friend by their side, to help one remain courageous. This story has a universal theme, where action coupled with the ability to take lead, saves lives. On the other hand, it takes a very courageous person to have over leadership when they know they can’t complete a task.

These stories are wonderful to read. Saras is more structured, but Leo’s has great possibilities.

Best Monthly Acrostic Winners - February 2010

Congratulations to the winners of "Best Monthly Acrostic" Prompt 1 - 12 .

Every poem submitted this month, speaks from the heart and soul, therefore it’s hard to say one is better than the others. However with these particular prompts we were looking for acrostics that are more universal in nature. Our judging will be a little different, as we will try and sum up what we feel about each poem and share it with you.

Prompt 1 – My Family

My Family is both personal and universal in nature, and we were proud that many showed such diverse loyalty to family, while recognizing that no one is perfect. We found a lot of wonderful adjectives to describe what we felt were the meat of the piece itself.

While all of you had wonderful ideas on family, Yellow Tulip is the winner as her poem is more about a universal family.

Prompt 2 – Sisterhood

We were very surprise to receive so many diverse; but united thoughts on the concept of sisterhood itself. Sisterhood means different things to the individual. What we were looking for here is more of a universal meaning; embodying “association or unification of women in a common cause”.

Amias is the winner because her poem to us embodies a more universal association or unification of women in a common cause.

Prompt 3 – Brotherhood

We were very surprise that many of you did not tackle this equally important subject, as it is the mate to sisterhood. It seems to us that brotherhood is grossly misunderstood universally. I would love to see this topic discussed and revisited.

Insightful is good, however in this particular case; Vidya is the winner as her poem as it is more universal on a positive note.

Prompt 4 – My Country

My Country was more of a personal piece, which could be extended to a more universal concept. We so enjoyed the pride everyone took in their country, even though no country is perfect in governing the people all the time.

Yamini (Prideful; positive)

Hopeful and insightful can mean the same thing, universally, and it’s hard to separate the two at times. We chose both Amias and Write Girl as the winners, because we could not come to a consensus on either. This is indeed a good thing; universally.

Prompt 5 – Our Land

Again we were very surprise to see that many did not even bother to understand the universal concept of “Our Land”, and was disappointed to see it passed over. Among the two submissions we were able to choose one.

Amias is the winner as her poem is more universal, as it relates to hope.

Prompt 6 – United Nations

This was a hard prompt, as it forces one to step out side of their comfort zone, and the four participants did it proud. All of these were universal in nature, but one stood out.

Saras is the winner because his piece was more Universal as it relates to Unity, and that is what the United Nations are all about; Unity in making the world a better place for all to live in.

Prompt 7 – Divided We Fall

We were very surprise at the feeling we got as we read these wonderful acrostics. Although there are three that are very universal in nature, two stood out.

Insightful is a wonderful thing to have, and it’s hard to move it away from understanding, as one must have understanding to be insightful. Therefore we chose Amias and Leo as the winners here; because one concept could not be removed from the other; when both are equally important to a more universal way of thinking.

Prompt 8 – Together We Stand

Every poem was a masterpiece in and of itself! These are amazing and all are winners here, and this made it very difficult to choose one thought when all are clearly universal in nature; however we were able to narrow it down to two, which were unique to say the least.

Scribbling Girl wins because her poem speaks more to Universal Love, and Write Girl wins because hers speak to the other side of the coin when it comes to love, Universal Spirit.

Prompt 9 – Comets

This was indeed an interesting prompt, as it brought unity in thought on one level, but there were two that stood out, although one was chosen.

Prompt 10 – Rainbows

Rainbows are one of the wonders of nature, a gift from the Divine; it means different things to the individual based on beliefs, etc. This particular prompt evoked thoughts from fantasy to retribution, and everything in-between. You all did wonderful with this prompt, but one stood out most profoundly.

There are many winners here; however we chose the one that showed a more universal possibilities of the rainbow. Amias is the winner, as her poem is both insightful and about love of humanity. Also sharing the win is Leo and Vidya as their poems speaks to the universal hope of humanity hues.

Prompt 11 – Phoenix

This was not an easy prompt, although everyone knows the concept of a Phoenix, sometimes it hard to make it universal. Especially when we all are going through some personal rebirths. However, one did stand above the crowd.

Acrostic Only 2009 "Poet of the Year!"

Maggie Lee Scott, who is an amazing poet, won Acrostic Only "Poet Of The Year Award" for 2009.

About Maggie ....
Maggie was born in South Carolina, but raised in Georgia. She comes from a military family. She joined the United State Air Force when she was nineteen, and it is where she met her husband. She is a mother and grandmother. She is also a widow.

"Some of my favorite things to do are to write poetry, travel and communicate with others on my computer. I am a fan of the Atlanta Braves baseball team and two of my favorite programs on the TV are Desperate Housewives and Baseball. Some of my favorite movies are The Good Earth, Gone with the Wind, The Color Purple, and Dr. Zhivago. Few people I admire are Mother Teresa, Rosa Park, and Gandhi," said Maggie.

For the year of 2009, Maggie won the "Poet of the Month" award twice, and countless badges for "Best Acrostic Poem". She is always willing to help whenever called upon, and has such a wonderful passion for writing poetry, especially rhyming.

Back Seat Driver (Acrostic Story)

Bethany had a way of irritating anyone she rode in the car with. Her endless chatter was distracting. By the time whoever had ridden with her got out of the car, they were digging through their purses looking for a bottle of Tylenol.

Against her better judgment Angie agreed to pick Bethany up for work. They each took turns driving back and forth to do their part in cutting back on pollution. Funny thing was when it come to Bethany's turn to drive she always scooted over to the passenger seat and insisted someone else drove.

Cautiously backing out of Bethany's drive, Angie flipped on the turn signal indicating her right hand turn. Bethany instantly made the comment, "You know you should have turned your signal on at least half a block before you were going to turn. Angie gritted her teeth and said nothing.

Karma had a way of making it's round when it was least expected. On this Angie placed all her hopes.

Seriously, thought Angie, how much longer she could stand to car pool with Bethany's back seat driving she didn't know.

Ever minute out on the freeway with Bethany was a little prick to her already throbbing head. Angie tried to employ the count to ten method of easing her frustration.

Again from the back seat Bethany made a comment. This time it was about Angie's speed. "Goodness Angie, where did you learn to drive? I mean can you go any faster, at this speed we'll get there next year."

Thump, thump, thump Angie's heart raced along with her blood pressure. Please she prayed, let Bethany get lock jaw or a sore throat.

Daring to look back in the rear view mirror Angie shot Bethany one of those go to blazes look and stuck her tongue out. She knew it was childish but at this point she didn't care.

Readjusting her mirror, Angie pretended she'd meant to do that, readjust the mirror that is.

Irritated at her apparent lack of helpful criticism Bethany, shut her mouth.

Valerie covered her mouth with her hand to prevent her laugh from escaping. She knew how Angie felt. Last week it was her turn to drive and Bethany had barked out driving instructions all the way from her house to work. Valerie swore she'd never offer to drive again after that week. A person could only take so much from a back seat driver.

Everyone sighed a breath of relied when Angie parked her car at work. Everyone jumped out fast to put some distance between Bethany and them. Patience was at a end with them all.

Reaching the steps to the building Bethany misstepped and took a fall. Hearing her call for help Angie and Valerie turned around and started laughing. I swear Bethany, you should tell us when you are going to make a spectacle of yourself, stated Angie. Yeah said Valerie the least you could do is give us some signal. Turning back around Angie and Valerie entered the building laughing with satisfied glee. Yep karma had a way of catching up with pains in the butt. There was Bethany at the bottom of the steps with her skirt up around her head. Good thing she'd wore underwear today.

Betrayal (Acrostic Short Story)

Bailey’s Home is small, no more than ten rooms, but it has satisfied and happy people there. I manage the place and even though I don’t stay there, it’s like a second home to me. It’s a home, where those once on the streets, now stay in harmony. It is owned by Don Bailey, a wealthy entrepreneur, who doesn’t really care for the building also. I manage it happily, and he lets me do my job without hindering.

Every day, as I come through the adjoining park, I feel happy that I see fewer people there now. It used to have many, sleeping under trees and on benches. Now, in the chilly winter season, it has but a few. I’ve asked them to Bailey’s before, but they don’t want to. I bring them food and clothes. Not many help these poor souls.

The people at Bailey’s call me son. It feels nice when I hear that. My parents are settled in Dubai and I do miss them. I’ll be visiting them after spending Christmas at Bailey’s. With the help of the people, I got the place decorated. The doorbell rang.

Rising from my chair, I went to answer it. To my surprise, it was Don. His chauffeur had a bag of gifts, which he handed to me. I smiled, and took Don inside. The spirit of Christmas has got to him too, I thought.

All the gifts were placed under the Christmas tree. He told me it’d be useful for them to open the gifts at midnight itself, and since the weather was cold, I agreed. After singing carols at midnight, I handed them out to the many people there. There was enough for all, and they were warm blankets. Every one came and thanked Don for his thoughtfulness. My flight to Dubai was to leave Newark at noon, and I had packing to do, so I wished all and went on my way. Even on my flight, I was thinking only of them.

Yesterday, I returned to New York after a month at my parents’ place. After unpacking, armed with three packets of chocolates, I started on my walk to Bailey’s. As I walked through the park, to my dismay, I saw more people on the benches. I saw Louis, who used to be at Bailey’s. I went to him. Seeing me, he broke into tears.

As I listened, he told me that 2 days after I left, Bailey had come and thrown all of them out of the house. With me conveniently out of the way, no one could fight him. Bailey’s was demolished and a new ten storey apartment was going to be built there. The gifts on Christmas had been a ruse to show his love, try and bribe them out. When they didn’t accept, he forcefully threw them out.

Love had been conquered by money. I could do nothing for them now. In his quest for wealth, Don betrayed me, betrayed them, their happiness.

Ghosts (Acrostic Short Story)

Gloria pulled out the quilt from the old cedar chest her grandmother had given her. She had almost forgot the quilt was there. Funny how the mind works. Gently hugging the quilt, she sniffed it. She found a trace of what she was smelling for, that and the strong aroma of mothballs.

How long ago had it been? Two, three, maybe four years now. Time passes you by when you're lost to the world. Still in this moment of quiet reflection, it seemed like only yesterday.

Only, Gloria thought. How good did only's do? No better than should haves she supposed. It wasn't only Gloria who'd suffered. Her husband, a quiet man, suffered. His suffering had resulted in a mental breakdown. Now she only seen him on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It was the only time the mental ward at the hospital allowed her to see him.

Silent tears began to fall, puddling at her feet. She wrapped the quilt around her shoulders, trying to find solace or comfort whichever came first.

Tick tock, tick tock the clocked chimed in. If only the hands of time could be rewound.

Slowly she folded the quilt, smelling it one more time. Sometimes memories (such as these) were like ghost, so haunting. Better to leave the memories of her daughter folded withing stitches of the quilt. Better to quiet the ghosts of yesterday.
